Frequently Asked Questions
Amchara would be delighted to host you for a longer stay (subject to availability). Many independent clients book for longer periods to experience deeper health benefits. You may discuss this prior to making your booking, speak with Emily at Amchara or let me know when you have your retreat planning call.
I’ll be planning more retreat weeks in 2018. However you don’t need to wait until then to give yourself a health boost. I feel very confident to recommend Amchara for a solo retreat. I would be happy to liaise with you and Amchara to ensure your health goals are accommodated – please book a retreat planning call with me to discuss more.
It’s a very relaxed atmosphere at Amchara. No need to dress up, bring clothes to feel good and relax in. My suggestion would be yoga/sportswear – good for relaxing, yoga, walking. Swimwear – for the pool, hot tub and sauna, some casual wear for trips to local villages and something warm for the evenings. I’ll send you a suggested packing list before your retreat.
The yoga classes are gentle and restorative and led by expert teachers who will adapt and give options for beginners and for those who are more advanced. It’s a great opportunity for to try out yoga and experience the wonderful relaxed feeling you’ll receive. The yoga studio is beautiful and has a huge picture window overlooking stunning countryside and there’s also a roof terrace for outdoor classes too – this adds something that you won’t experience in the local church hall!
The Amchara Chef and Kitchen team specialise in food plans to support detoxification, in particular juices, smoothies, soups, broth and raw food. Mostly the food is vegetarian and vegan (there will be some options of eggs, chicken and fish). All the food is locally sourced and freshly prepared on site. Individual allergies, intolerances and dietary requirements will be catered for.
For this retreat week I have worked closely with Amchara’s Chef, Carina to offer a healthy food plan incorporating all the great food and juices they currently offer plus a few complementary ideas of mine! This means HEALTHY EATING MEALS as well as juices. I’d love you to feel great, enjoy tasty healthy food and feel inspired to carry on with this at home.
The foods chosen are specifically to support the body’s digestion and detoxifcation systems. Meals will be simple, tasty and light. My aim is to give you the opportunity to taste and try dishes and snacks which may be new to you, and that you’ll want to add to your menu plan at home. We’ll be including a few food demos and tasting sessions too.
All meals will be dairy and gluten free and no alcohol or caffeine will be served. Meals and snacks are timed for every 3 hours – usually 9am, 12 noon, 3pm and 6pm. This helps balance your blood sugar and embeds a habit of mealtimes and allows you to rest your digestion overnight.
I’d be happy to chat with you and answer any questions or concerned you have about the food plan – I know it is probably the biggest concern people have about a retreat week – call me and we will talk through a typical days menu.
Yes of course. Recently, I was a visiting practitioner at Amchara, and chose to do the full juice and broth detox programme. I found it so beneficial and have to say easy to do, that I’m also offering this as an option to clients. If you’d like a deeper cleanse this is an ideal option.
The Amchara team is there to support you and ensure you have the best possible experience. If you want to change your food plan, all you need to do is have a chat with either me during the retreat, and your plan may be adjusted (additional charges may be applicable depending on your new food plan).
If you miss a meal or snack time, your food/juice will be placed in the fridge for you or soup can be in a flask for you to collect later.
I found travelling to Gozo very easy. There are many flight options to choose from most UK and European Regional airports, with flying time approx 3-3 ½ hours depending on your departure airport. Amchara will happily arrange your transfers from Malta airport to Gozo and you will be invoiced at the end of your retreat.
Malta’s airport is relatively small, so getting through passport security was quick for me. The taxi firm contracted to Amchara met me, and the driver whisked me and my luggage out of the airport and drove me to the ferry terminal. The journey is roughly 40 minutes and you’ll get good views of the island as you drive through.
Ferries run 24 hours a day – every 45 minutes (and during the night they are every 90 minutes) so there’s no need to worry about getting stranded. The ferry terminal is large and modern, the taxi will drop you at the door and you just walk onto the ferry with your luggage (trolleys are available).
You don’t pay on the outward journey so there’s no need to worry about Euros or finding the ticket booth. I sat in the ferry café and “people watched” for 20 minutes and before I knew it I’d arrived. My taxi driver had phoned ahead to say which ferry I was on so again I was met by the local taxi firm, a lovely lady driver, Marlene took care of me on the short 20-minute drive to Amchara. It was all very easy and well coordinated. The travelling time and the ferry ride to the Island of Gozo, all helps you feel that you’re truly leaving everything behind, giving you time to unwind on your journey.
The return journey home was easy too. The day before you leave, the reception team will give you a print out of the taxi pick up time, the ferry time and your invoice for any extras you’ve received e.g. your transfer costs and treatments like massages. On departure day you’ll be given a complimentary healthy snack pack for your return journey.
When the driver drops you at the ferry terminal, you’ll need 4.65 Euros to buy a ticket at the kiosk in the terminal. You’ll be met at the Malta ferry terminal by a driver who’ll drive you to the airport and drop you at the departure terminal.
If you’d like assistance with booking flights and adding on accommodation/sightseeing trips before or after you retreat I am able to recommend travel consultants to help you.
All activities and schedules are entirely optional. The retreat is deliberately designed to give you a gentle structure and to allow you to listen to your body. Please follow your intuition, you’ll know if you require to sleep late, have a nap or fancy a swim or sauna or a gentle walk. Many clients say one of the things they love about Amchara is that it is not a BOOT CAMP. It’s a lovely nurturing place – easy to join in and easy to be alone and have quiet time.
The activities like yoga and daily walk are designed for gentle movement and to support detoxification and de stressing. The Health talks and food demonstrations are designed to give you education, information and tips to help you at home. I invite you to participate as you’ll receive lots of well being benefits but there’s no pressure to join in.
Yes there is free WIFI. You’re welcome to stay connected to your family, friends and business. My suggestion is that you set some boundaries around this – remember you’re investing in a healthy break and that means pausing your responsibilities so you may truly rest. I can give you tips on how to do this if you need some help.
Of course, Gozo is a lovely island and the natural beauty and charm is abundant. It’s easy to take a walk or borrow a bike from the retreat centre. A local bus stops just outside the reception area, in 10 minutes and 1Euro 50 you can visit the island’s main town, Victoria, which is the hub of the island. Amchara can arrange taxis for you. There will be a complimentary afternoon trip to do some local sightseeing on one of our afternoons. The island is small, so it’s easy to take a trip for a couple of hours and be back in time for mealtimes.
I’d love to have a chat with you to answer any questions. Please book a Retreat Planning Call with me – I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
